On the NTTP Physics course, students will train towards a professional teaching qualification, achieving Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The course requires a study of academic literature and completion of professional assignments, alongside two school based placements. The course is designed to show that trainee teachers demonstrate that they have met the standards for Qualified Teacher Status.
The course is perfect for those who find Science exciting and challenging who are then able to share this enthusiasm with young people. Trainees will experience lessons across a range of ages and attainment, reflecting the diverse needs of students in our schools. Trainees will work alongside an experienced team of Scientists, who have proven ability to ensure achievement for all students. You will explore a wide ranging content; develop knowledge and skills which will enable you to become an effective and inspiring classroom practitioner in Science. You will also have the opportunity to develop a range of lessons and teaching styles that cover the practical delivery and theory of Science at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, where appropriate. These will be looked at during Subject Studies sessions. You will be expected to carry out health and safety assessments of practical’s and know when appropriate to plan practical’s into your lessons, that will ensure student’s gain the appropriate skills required to be successful in Science.
Trainees need to learn how to deliver in a style that suits their own personality but watch and learn from other teachers. Learning in a classroom requires professionalism, organisation, planning, preparation and excellent subject knowledge, across the department. Trainees will experience lessons across a range of ages and attainment, reflecting the diverse needs of students in our schools. Trainees will work alongside an experienced team of Science, who have proven ability to ensure achievement for all students. Through the process of observation and team teaching opportunities the ability to communicate key mathematical concepts and skills will be developed.
When you study Physics on the NTTP programme you receive a practice-led, hands on experience. Trainees are supported by a Subject Based Tutor (SBT) within school, the Professional Tutor of the school, the Lead Subject Mentor from the NTTP SCITT, the Programme Facilitators along with the Administration staff team. Subject Studies and General Professional Study sessions enhance your knowledge of teaching and learning and help to develop your pedagogy. Constant self-reflection allows trainees to assess their strengths and development potential, which should allow progression and confidence.
You will spend the majority of your course in the classroom; working with dedicated professionals and fantastic students. This is the best place to learn the art of teaching and you will be amazed at the speed at which your teaching develops. Your programme is designed to suit you, with your strengths nurtured and your areas for development targeted, improved upon and monitored.
During your placements you will teach pupils in the 11 to 16 age range, however, in many of our partnership schools there will be the opportunity to experience Post 16 Education too. You will also experience PSHE and Citizenship delivery when acting as a form tutor.
Subject Studies are usually delivered as twilight sessions and mostly take place in the first half of the year so that you have the tools to succeed in your school placements. They are designed to illustrate ways to help you apply your knowledge and understanding in designing and teaching lessons. Sessions are delivered by your Lead Subject Mentor (LSM) and other experienced teachers from within partnership schools. Sessions are held across a selection of our schools.

During the selection process, you will complete a Subject Knowledge Audit. You will review this with your LSM at the start of the training year and it will become the starting point for your Individual Learning Plan 1 (ILP1) which will establish target areas for the development of your subject knowledge and application. Subject Studies sessions will help you to meet these targets, but will also be responsible for identifying and filling any gaps in your subject knowledge.

Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses
You may be asked to complete a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course before you start training. These are courses that schools and universities ask candidates to take when they feel they have all the right attributes to teach, but need to improve their subject knowledge. This could be because your degree is not in your chosen teaching subject, or you haven’t been in full-time education for some time.
They are aimed at those who have already been offered a place on a postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT) course and will help you to gain the depth of subject knowledge and skills you need to be able to teach your chosen subject. If you meet the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) eligibility criteria, you can access a fully funded SKE course and you may also be eligible for a tax-free SKE training bursary.
